Recently Mozilla announced its intention to set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hours. The record-setting attempt is planned for the launch day for Firefox 3, also known as Download Day. The Download Day falls on 17th June 2008 at 10am PDT, which is on 18th June 2008 at 1am in Malaysia and ended 24 hours later.
For us at Kuching Open Source Community (KOSC), we do not have any party for it but some of the members have been spreading the words around and get ready for the Download Day. On the last hour before the version is released to the public, I have checked from the site to see how many from Malaysia has pledged to download the new version and the number is around 9,7705 (almost hit the 10k mark) and on the next morning at 9.37am, 8+ hours after the Download Day started we already have 6,322 people from Malaysia downloaded the new Firefox 3.
For those who has contributed or participated in the Download Day, you can generate the certificate of participation (see the scaled down version of my certificate) from the Download Day Headquarters or directly point your browser here.
As the result, Mozilla got more than 8 million Firefox 3 downloads in 24 hours, and from that amount around 30k are from Malaysia !! Now let just sit back for few days while the good people of Guinness review the World Record attempt.
You can check from Download Day Headquarters for the result in the next couple of days.
